Skip the Cash: Trade Your Stuff for What You Actually Want

You don't have to sell your stuff to get rid of it — you can trade it for something you actually need. FlyerBoard's Exchange listings skip the price tag entirely: describe what you're after, and let people who have it come to you. No pricing debates, no lowballers, just a straight swap.

Think about the last thing you sold for cash. Chances are you took less than it was worth just to move it, then spent that cash — plus more — buying the thing you actually wanted. Cutting out the middleman step is the whole idea behind trading.

Why trade instead of just selling for cash?

Because some items aren't really "for sale" so much as "up for the right offer."

  • Skip the pricing headache. That old bookshelf, mismatched dumbbell set, or half-used art supplies — nobody agrees on what they're worth. Trading sidesteps the argument entirely.
  • Get exactly what you need, faster. Selling for cash and then shopping for a replacement is two transactions. Trading is one.
  • No lowball offers. "Would you take $10?" doesn't really work when there's no price to lowball. People come to you already offering something in kind.
  • Move stuff that's barely worth listing. A $15 item is barely worth the hassle of a cash sale, but might swap easily for something of equal value.

How do you list something to trade?

It's built straight into the normal posting flow — no separate app, no separate form.

  1. Start a new ad from Post an Ad, same as any listing.
  2. Choose Exchange as the listing type (or Both, if you'd also take cash).
  3. The price field disappears — you don't need one.
  4. Write your exchange description: what you're hoping to get in return. "Looking for a mountain bike or camping gear" pulls far better offers than "open to offers."
  5. Add photos and describe the item, same as always.

That's it. It shows up in the normal feed and category pages, right alongside cash listings. Good photos and an honest description matter just as much on a trade, so the same tips that make an ad sell fast apply here too.

What do buyers see on a trade listing?

Instead of a price, they get an "Open to Trade" badge and your description of what you're after, right there on the card. Nobody has to read a wall of text to work out it's a swap — so the people who message you are already offering something in kind, not haggling over a number that was never there.

How do you actually make a trade happen?

Just message. There's no separate "propose a trade" button — you use FlyerBoard's normal in-app chat:

  • Say what you're offering in return, and link your own listing if you've got one.
  • Ask about condition, size or pickup before you commit to anything.
  • Work out the details in the thread, exactly like negotiating a price.

Keeping it in-app means there's a record of what was agreed — and you're not handing a stranger your phone number before you've even met.

Why isn't this just a Facebook Buy Swap Sell group?

Because in those groups, "trade" listings are a mess. Someone posts a photo with "PMs open for swaps," offers pile up as comments underneath the photo, and half the thread is people asking questions nobody answers. There's no proper way to say what you actually want, and no way for someone scrolling past to tell your listing is a trade until they've read the whole caption.

On FlyerBoard, Exchange is a real listing type, not a caption convention. It gets its own badge, its own description field, and its own place in the normal browse feed — so someone looking for exactly what you're offering can actually find it, instead of scrolling past a hundred unrelated posts hoping to spot one.

If you're not sure whether to trade or sell, you don't have to pick — set the listing to Both and take whichever offer, cash or swap, is actually good.

What kinds of things actually trade well?

Anything with an obvious "if you have X, I'll swap for Y" pairing works best:

  • Kids' gear that ages out fast. A cot for a bigger bed, a bike two sizes up, a car seat for the next stage.
  • Hobby equipment. A tent for camping gear you're missing, a guitar amp for pedals, ski gear for a snowboard.
  • Tools and equipment. A drill for a saw, a mower for a whipper snipper — tradies and DIYers swap constantly.
  • Anything you'd otherwise just donate. If cash was never really the point, trading turns a giveaway into something useful back.

The common thread: you know roughly what you'd take instead of money, even if you don't know exactly what it's worth.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Am I locked into a trade once someone messages me? No. A message is just an offer — you're free to negotiate, ask for something different, or say no.

Q: Can I switch a listing from Sale to Exchange later? Yes — edit the ad and change the listing type. Switching to Exchange clears any existing price.

Q: Can I browse only trade listings? Not as a dedicated filter yet — trade listings show up in the normal category feeds, marked with the "Open to Trade" badge.

Q: Is trading safer or riskier than a cash sale? Same rules either way: meet in public, check the item in person, and keep the conversation on FlyerBoard until the swap's agreed.
